Potatoes in Canada Reports on AI AgriScout System
PVY is one of the most economically significant diseases for Canadian potato farmers – and it’s especially challenging for seed growers, who are required to keep PVY levels under a very low threshold. A team of Canadian scientists that includes U of G professor Dr. Gurjit Randhawa is working with a full range of regional industry stakeholders to commercialize an AI system called AgriScout for early identification and mapping of PVY infections – and eventually the early detection of other pests and diseases in potatoes and beyond. According to Randhawa, AgriScout is as effective as human scouts, which are in short supply.

With funding from the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance, Randhawa is expanding his work to Ontario soybean fields to detect white mould, a persistent soilborne disease. A new robot, equipped with thermal and multispectral cameras, monitors the environmental conditions that trigger mould outbreaks. Read the story: U of G Researcher Uses AI Robots to Fight Crop Disease
