Program and Curriculum

Play-based Curriculum

All of our programs are founded on child-centred or play-based learning.  The philosophical roots of this approach come from Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson, Lev Vygotsky, Frederick Froebel, John Dewey and Maria Montessori.  Learning in the child-centred program does not happen by chance or accident.  Rather, learning takes place through the creation of a developmentally appropriate environment and specific goals and objectives, enhanced by purposeful interactions with RECEs and Playroom Staff knowledgeable about children’s growth and development. Children in a child-centred program learn to respect others because they are respected, learn self-control and self-reliance because they have power and freedom, and learn to love learning because they have met with success and encouragement.

Curriculum in all programs is based on the Emergent Curriculum  with a strong focus on the child's ability to self-select aspects of the environment that are stimulating, challenging and fun.  Opportunities for creative expression and problem solving are available throughout the program, both indoors and outdoors.  The Toddler and Preschool curricula reflect the unique developmental abilities and challenges of each age group.
