Study and Live in Cuba in Winter 2017

The Cuba Semester will provide an opportunity for up to 26 Guelph students to spend the Winter 2017 semester in Cuba, and is open to students from all disciplines. 

While in Cuba, students will take courses and live in residence at two partner institutions; Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Agrícolas (National Institute of Agricultural Sciences), Mayabeque Province and the Universidad de Guantanamo, Guatanamo Provice.

Cuba Semester Coordinator for Winter 2017

The Semester Abroad Coordinator supervises all academic activities, teaches the Fall 2016 courses as well as 2 courses in Cuba, organizes group activities and field trips and provides information and support to students prior to departure and during their time in Cuba.

Mandatory Fall 2016 Course

All students who are accepted to participate in the Cuba Semester Winter 2017 will be enrolled in a 0.5 credit Cuba Semester course in Fall 2016. This course is taught by the Cuba Semester Coordinator and will offer an interdisciplinary perspective on Cuba, and prepare students for the Cuba semester. 

Cuba Semester Courses 

The tentative course subjects for the Winter 2017 semester include Spanish language, Cuban society (history, politics and culture), Agroecology in Cuba, Community Development and Global Food Systems. Spanish language skills are not a requirement to apply to the Cuba Semester.

Field Trips and Group Events

Field trips and group activities will be held throughout the semester, allowing students to further explore and learn more about Cuba.

Accommodations on the Cuba Semester

Students will live in residence accommodations, provided by the university partners in Cuba.

Cuba Semester Costs and Funding

Students on a semester abroad program pay full-time University of Guelph tuition.

The estimated Cuba Semester Abroad fee of $3200 will cover the cost of accommodations, field trips, and most meals. This amount is subject to change due to fluctuations in the exchange rate.

All costs, including airfare, tuition, and incidentals are the responsibility of the student.
