Exchange Pre-Departure Guide

Host Institution Application and Acceptance

After you have been accepted by the University of Guelph to go on exchange, you must apply to the host institution to be accepted through their application procedures. Instructions for where to find and how to complete your host institution exchange application are included in your nomination package from the Centre for International Programs by the end of March.

Finances

One of the big questions you had to ask yourself when you applied for study abroad was ‘How am I going to pay for this’? Most students who go on a study abroad program find that they spend between 1.5 - 2 times what they would spend while studying at the University of Guelph. Your first step to financially planning for your exchange is to make a realistic budget, and we recommend that you do this as soon as possible. The # 1 reason for students cancelling their exchange later on is because they did not look into costs until last minute and then realize that they can’t afford to study abroad.

Exchange Course Selection & Approval

Where to find host university courses  and determining the number of courses you need to take while on exchange.

Transferring Credits back to the University of Guelph

When your exchange is completed, your host university will send an academic transcript directly to the Centre for International Programs. Once the Centre for International Programs has received your exchange transcript from your host institution, we will send a copy of the transcript to your Program Counsellor and notify you.

Registering for Courses for your Semester

While you are away on exchange, you will need to register for courses for the semester when you return to Guelph.

Mandatory Pre-departure Orientation

Once you have accepted your exchange nomination, you will receive an email from the Centre for International Programs confirming that you have been registered for DepartSmart on Courselink.

Get Connected & Have Fun

There are many exciting ways to keep your study abroad experiences alive, and to help other students have a wonderful experience whether it during their sojourn abroad or coming for a semester or two here at the University of Guelph.
