About the University of Guelph

History

The University of Guelph was founded in 1964, when three existing colleges – and a new College of Arts and Sciences - were brought together to form the University. The three existing colleges were the Ontario Agricultural College (founded in 1874), MacDonald Institute (founded in 1903), and the Ontario Veterinary College (established in 1862 and recognized as a College in 1922). Today, the University of Guelph's undergraduate and graduate students benefit from a comprehensive and innovative curriculum that spans the arts, humanities, physical and natural sciences, and social sciences. The University of Guelph is one of the highest-ranking comprehensive universities in Canada (according to MacLean’s magazine rankings) and is known worldwide for its research and superior academic programs.
