June 5: Jane Londerville Speaks on Mortgage Insurance

Posted on Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

Jane Londerville, associate professor of Real Estate and Housing within the Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies recently spoke to Department of Finance staff in Ottawa last Tuesday, May 29th. Jane spoke on the subject matter of mortgage insurance discussed in her latest instalment of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute’s Straight Talk series. Londerville argued that homebuyers who need mortgage insurance are best served when there is competition for their business. To maximize competition there needs to be a level playing field for mortgages insured by private companies and those backed by the federal Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

In addition to her talk, Dr. Londerville served as a witness regarding the budget Bill C-38 in front of the House of Commons standing finance committee and held a video conference with the senate committee on banking trade and commerce. Dr. Londerville has taught at the University of Guelph since 1993, teaching and conducting research in the area of mortgage finance. She also completed a PhD in Urban Land Economics at UBC, worked as a real estate consultant for Ernst and Young and completed an MBA at Harvard.
