Photo contest highlights agri-food research excellence at U of G

The winners have been announced in the 2023 Research in Focus photo contest hosted by the University of Guelph’s Office of Research.

The Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance supported a special “Agri-Food in Focus” category, which received dozens of creative and high-quality submissions. Thank you to all participants who captured the moments that demonstrate U of G’s commitment to agri-food research and innovation.

The winner of the Agri-Food in Focus prize is “Internship student” by Wissarut Sukhaket.

Rays of sunlight stream down artistically on a seated beekeeper, who is carefully lifting a bee-covered frame up. Her short-sleeved t-shirt, head and hat are also covered with bees, but her face is visible and expresses placid concentration.

There are three honourable mentions:

Thriving grain corn – Polly Musayidizi*Wispy white cloud and a blue sky brighten a straw-covered row on a farm, with corn about 20cm high growing on either side.

A little perk me up – Michele Brower A blonde woman with glasses is seated on a barn floor with a young calf's head cradled in her elbow. She is holding a tube of medicine in her blue-gloved hands, which she is administering to the calf, who is licking her nose.

Standing On a Firm Foundation – Rebecka Sadler*A white lamb stands on the back of a ewe and looks directly at the camera.

The other non-agri-food winners are as follows:

First place: Doing research in the highlands of Peru – Silvia Sarapura

Second place: Structuring food of the future – Louis Colaruotolo

Third place: Roadside Diner – Mark Duchene

Community choice: Don't Panic, it's Organic

In total, there were 147 entries to this year’s contest.

*The corn, sheep and calf photos depict research that is funded by the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance, a collaboration between the Government of Ontario and the University of Guelph, and took place at one of Ontario’s agri-food research centres, which are owned by the Agricultural Research Institute of Ontario.
