Alliance-funded researchers receive Canada Research Chairs

Posted on Thursday, March 21st, 2024

Reducing antifungal resistance and increasing livestock health and productivity are the goals of two Canada Research Chairs (CRC) for University of Guelph researchers.

Dr. Jennifer Geddes-McAlister, Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, will hold a new Tier 2 chair in Proteomics of Fungal Disease in One Health.

Dr. Christine Baes, Animal Biosciences, will receive renewed support for her existing Tier 2 CRC in Livestock Genomics.

Dr. Jennifer Geddes-McAlister and her research team explore how plants and humans interact with fungal pathogens, with the aim of addressing antifungal resistance. Her Alliance-funded work focuses on fungal diseases' impact on the agricultural sector.

The renewed CRC will enable Baes to build on her accomplishments of the last five years during which her cutting-edge research program has led to long-term genetic improvement of livestock in Canada and around the globe. Baes is part of the team that won the U of G 2023 Innovation of the Year for developing a national genetic evaluation to identify dairy cattle with traits that help reduce methane emissions.
