University of Guelph Hosts Bandology on Campus This Summer
The Perfect Atmosphere
Ten years ago, Lisa Michaels founded Bandology because she witnessed the benefit that music brought to her three kids and their peers and wanted to extend that experience to as wide a community as she could. This non-profit organization provides youth from grades one to 12 opportunities to participate in ensemble music making. Instead of focusing on private lessons, groups work together in a space to learn in an inclusive environment.
As part of the Bandology program, young students played music in the impressive rehearsal and performance spaces located in the Arts Research Centre in the College of Arts at U of G during the summer. This provided an opportunity for the College’s extensive musical performance and rehearsal spaces and resources to be utilized during a period when the student population was less dense.
In order to facilitate Bandology’s collaborative lessons, Michaels shares that "coming to [the University of] Guelph was a bit of a no brainer." She continues, "the University is such a natural fit. They have a lovely music program here, with a beautiful building. The facilities are perfect."
Exploring U of G’s Campus

While participating in Bandology, youth of a wide range of ages had opportunities to meet many members of the U of G community and visit spaces outside of the College of Arts on U of G’s vast campus like the on campus restaurant, The Bullring, that boasts a live music set up, a feature unique to U of G. They also learned about outside opportunities to perform as part of organizations in the city of Guelph like the Guelph Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Michaels believes U of G’s campus is likely to leave a positive impression on the students who visited. "This is a good space here in the music building, but then step outside, there are beautiful, big park areas and grassland where we have the kids running around. It's good because the kids really see more about what University life is about, and then they think maybe they want to come to the University of Guelph," she comments.
A Taste of Performing at U of G
On Friday, July 31, a concert was held in the Arts Research Centre to showcase the hard work of this year's Bandology students. "We always welcome the community to come and check things out. We will have a whole flock of parents, family members, and neighbours come to the concert on Friday, which is always so sweet," said Michaels ahead of the event.
The College was thrilled to host Bandology and support artistic learning on campus. The College looks forward to the opportunity to welcome Bandology back in the future to aid youth in exploring their love of the arts.
