Social Aspects of Rural Upper Canada as Revealed Through British Emigrant Literature - Dr. Masters, advisor

Upper Canada received beginning in 1815 and extending into the 1860s a flood of British emigrants who overwhelmed the existing population. As an aid to emigrants, numerous directories were issued on the part of British journalists who had a knowledge of Upper canadian conditions. This thesis examines the facts and theories presented through British emigrant literature written between 1830 and 1867 as to the types of buildings, peoples and skills needed as well as climatic conditions and lifestyles to expected in the new province.
