Born and raised in Sarnia, Ontario, artist Laura Kreviazuk earned her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from the University of Guelph where she graduated with honours. Following graduation, she relocated to Toronto where she co-founded the VSVSVS studio collective and artist-run center. It was in Toronto that Laura began developing her own visual language, creating large scale, complex drawings defined by an extensive use of contrast, mark making and scale.
Having since returned to Sarnia, Laura is now dedicated full-time to her studio practice, drawing inspiration from the industrial surroundings of her hometown.
Working large scale is integral to Laura’s studio practice. She creates drawings that evolve through a constant process of erasure and revision of visual layering. Materials and methods of both drawing and paintings are integrated concurrently; the build-up of intricate overlays of drips, marks, and smears intensifies the dialogue of her composition.
The creation of each piece exhibits a cross interaction between instinct and image, causing a constant negotiation between marks and forms. By manipulating her source material, Laura cautiously creates uneasy compositions which often instil a sense of discomfort in her viewers. In doing so, she creates a space that is both visual and visceral.
Steered by intellect, intuitive inclination, and physical touch that evolves out of her process, there is no pre-determined outcome to Laura’s work. She obsessively works and reworks her surfaces until the piece pushes and pulls itself into completion.
