Two CBE graduate students move on to U of G Three Minute Thesis finals

On February 28th, the College of Business and Economics hosted their college 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition in order to decide upon two finalists to advance to the University of Guelph’s final competition. The competition is a university-wide competition for graduate students in which participants present their research and its wider impact in three minutes or less, to a panel of non-specialist judges.

Congratulations to Sandy Shen (PhD Management) and Yi Chen (MSc Marketing and Consumer Studies) on placing first and second place at the college heat, and moving on to the campus finals.

Sandy placed first place at the college heat. Her 3MT presentation looks at the use of eye-tracking technology in an effort to improve tourist brochure design.

“The 3MT competition has already been a great opportunity for me to showcase and pitch my research in a short and sweet way,” said Sandy. “It also allowed me to revisit my research to look at the bigger picture.”

“Preparing for the campus final, I’m working closely with my advisor – Marion Joppe – and practicing with a camera to further improve my presentation style.”

Yi placed second at the college heat, with a presentation that looks into why and what has an influence on movie demand.

“3 minutes is short, but it’s possible,” said Yi. “It can be difficult to put three years of research into those three minutes, but when you see the curiosity on people’s faces, you get excited to share your research with them.”

The U of G 3MT Campus Final takes place on Tuesday, March 27th at 1pm. The public is invited to support and cheer on their peers.
