Posted on Tuesday, December 15th, 2020

After 34 extraordinary years in academia, associate professor Joan Flaherty has announced her retirement at the end of this year. In her 23 years as a full-time faculty member in the School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management at the Lang School, Joan has taught in the undergraduate and graduate programs, most notably, Hospitality and Tourism Business Communications and Management. She has made significant contributions to the School and received many distinguished awards, including The Faculty Award for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching; the U of G Faculty Association Professorial Teaching Award, and the Bill Braithwaite MBA Distinguished Professorial Award.

With a passion for sustainable tourism, Joan had the opportunity to travel to Nepal with her students on a 2-week field course. To honour Joan, she has requested that a retirement gathering (including virtual) not be held, but rather, to donate to Nepal Moving Mountains, which is a fund for ongoing development programs and projects in education, social welfare, and health initiatives in Nepal.

Below is a fundraising link that has been set-up in honour of Joan's retirement through the Nepal Moving Mountains.
