April 18: The new normal in food safety

Acting CME Dean Sylvain Charlebois writes in The Record, that as a result of the Stephen Harper government’s focus on deficit reduction, the Ministry of Agriculture is facing cuts that will exceed 10 per cent, resulting in significant job loss for the department over the next three years. Food safety inspectors in particular are expected to be severely affected. These measures may strike many as extreme, but they suggest that Canada is following a global trend of doing less with less in food safety risk management.
