The Co-operators Centre for Business and Social Entrepreneurship (CBaSE), housed within the University of Guelph’s College of Management and Economics, hosted the 5th annual Nicol Pitch Competition on Wednesday, February 15th, 2012.

The competition is designed to promote and reward the entrepreneurial spirit at the University of Guelph by encouraging students to develop complete business plans for innovative products and services.

Nine student teams from varying disciplines took to the stage to compete in a two-minute pitch competition, presenting their ideas to business leaders from the community. The judging panel consisted of Tova Davidson, Vice President of MacMillan Marketing Group; Jordan Jocius, Client Services Director, GJA Communications; and Michael Lanteigne, Financial Analyst, Manulife Financial.

The team of Erick Sharp, Vlad Rebellon and Alexey Novikov founded Basket, a mobile application designed to facilitate the consumer’s task of shopping while also providing valuable customer insight for retailers. As the first place team, they walked away with $500 in prize money, which was provided by the Wesley and Mary Nicol Charitable Foundation.

The first-place team along with the other eight teams will now have the opportunity to submit their full business plans which will be reviewed to determine the top five teams that will move on to the Nicol Venture Creation Competition taking place on campus February 29th, 2012.

Congratulations to the Basket App team!
