Jan. 21: DECA U Guelph brings home nine awards from provincial competition

One weekend, nine awards. CME’s DECA U team has many reasons to be proud of their performance at the DECA U provincial competition held in Toronto last weekend. The University of Guelph sent 95 students to compete in the sold-out conference that attracted 1500 delegates.

Students participated in both individual and team competitions clustered around six broad categories: business management & administration, communications & technology, entrepreneurship, finance & accounting, hospitality & tourism and marketing & sales. After completing written tests and oral presentations that are evaluated on a points system, U of G received awards in accounting, restaurant and food, business financial services, international marketing and business to business. According to Sean deLottinville, President of DECA U Guelph, the DECA U team has been preparing for the competition since last March when members were selected, culminating in a blitz training competition held the weekend prior to the conference. “We knew it would be a record year for Guelph,” he says. “When months of preparation pay off like this you can’t help but be tremendously proud of your team. As president of the U of G team, I am personally thrilled that we represented U of G so strongly. I am proud to call myself a Gryphon!”

U of G’s winners will go on to compete at the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) being held in May in Atlanta, Georgia. Our DECA U Guelph team is also planning to host its very first internal case competition later this year.
