October 12: CME Dean’s work garners praise from top e-learning and distance education researcher Tony Bates

Posted on Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

A leading Canadian researcher and consultant in the field of e-learning and distance has given a favourable review of Taking Stock: Research on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (McGill-Queen’s University Press), the 2010 book co-edited by Joy Mighty and CME Dean Julia Christensen Hughes.

The collection of essays from international pedagogical scholars stemmed from a research symposium held at the University of Guelph in 2008.

Tony Bates, a former director of Distance Education and Technology in the Continuing Studies Division of the University of British Columbia, posted the review on his blog.

In his review, Bates says he “would strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve the quality of teaching in universities (it would also apply to the academic departments in community colleges). It brings together in one place most of the key research in this area...”
