A team representing the University of Guelph just returned from New York City where they competed in the Cornell Real Estate Case Competition.

Dr. Tanya Mark, Faculty Member, Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies was the keynote speaker at the 2010 OMAFRA Agriculture Development Branch Conference in London, ON, on November 16th.  She presented research on changing consumer demographics in Ontario, their impact on consumer trends, and implications for the agricultural community in order to meet client needs in this changing environment.  

Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO) announced 13 research projects aimed to assess and highlight innovative and effective teaching/learning practices at Ontario’s colleges and universities. Focusing on the teaching/learning challenges facing large-enrolment introductory courses, Dean Julia Christensen Hughes and Researcher Barb Bloemhof's research project will examine if the approaches used in introductory accounting courses increase student engagement with the course content.

The Library hosts a special event to celebrate its Culinary Archives, the most complete collection of its kind in the world. Two CME faculty members won awards at the annual Administrative Sciences Association of Canada (ASAC) conference this year. Under the theme of Enterprising Our World, Sustainable Business in Action, members were encouraged to submit papers on a number of topics. Ron Baker received the best paper award for the Business History Division and Sean Lyons received the best paper award for the Gender and Diversity in Organizations Division.

As one of 17 teams competing across Canada, the University of Guelph came in third place at the Brock University Accounting Conference (BUAC) in Niagara Falls this weekend. Guelph’s team, comprised of Audrey Fu (Accounting Major), Ahmed Rizk (Management Economics & Finance Major), Kent Santin (Accounting Major) and Jathu Vasantharaja (Accounting Major), came in behind first place Concordia University and second place Carleton University.

A story in yesterday’s Globe and Mail references the work of Jamie Gruman, associate professor of organizational behaviour in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. The story by Wallace Immen examines the orientation practices of organizations in welcoming new hires. In it, Immen cites a survey-based study co-authored by Prof. Gruman and Prof.

PJ’s Restaurant in the Atrium has topped the Diners’ Choice “Great for Lunch” list in the Toronto/Ontario section of Opentable.com. The restaurant guide website states the top 10 list was derived from the choices of “more than 85,600 diners.”
Facing strong competition from across the Greater Toronto Area, PJ’s was ranked higher than top restaurants such as Mercatto, FOUR and Oliver & Bonacini’s. Among the 10 restaurants chosen, PJ’s was the only one located outside the GTA.

The current issue of Academic Matters features an article by Joan Flaherty, assistant professor in CME’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, on the pros and cons of adopting technology in the classroom. Academic Matters is the biannual magazine of the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations, and is mailed to 17,000 professors, academic librarians, and others interested in higher education issues across Canada.

In Monday’s Globe and Mail, Ken Smith, CME’s Associate Dean, Executive Programs, is quoted in a Gordon Pitts story on the proposed takeover of Saskatchewan’s Potash Corp. by Australian mining giant BHP Billiton Ltd.
