Earlier this month, this year's top academic Lang accounting students had the chance to interact with industry professionals at the annual KPMG Day, an exclusive day dedicated to networking with the accounting firm.

The event builds upon KPMG's relationships between the firm's professional accountants and Lang faculty and students. This year's KPMG Day featured professionals from a variety of different practices, including human resources, audit, tax, leadership, corporate finance and data analytics. The industry representatives interacted with a variety of business students in the classroom, in small group meetings and luncheons, and in large networking sessions.

Among the interactions, students had the chance to ask questions about their personal career experiences, challenges and insights as they prepare to enter the job market. At a panel discussion, KPMG professionals offered advice on standing out in the workplace and how students can differentiate themselves in the job market. The panel featured:

  • Mary Jo Fedy, Managing Partner, Waterloo Office
  • Tom Mennill, Partner, Audit
  • Kim Haley, Partner, Audit
  • Courtney Cheal, Senior Manager, Audit
  • Adrian Goberdhan, Associate and Senior Consultant, Mergers and Acquisitions

KPMG wrapped up the event with an informal reception with honour roll accounting students and awarded their Citizenship award. The Citizenship Award recipient is selected by KPMG from a pool of students nominated by their peers. Students were nominated based on their demonstrated leadership on campus, contribution to the community and achieved academic excellence. Congratulations to Sharanya Tiwari, who was the 2019 award recipient!

"KPMG Day brought together students, faculty members and representatives from KPMG for an afternoon of networking and learning," said Tiwari. "It is a unique event celebrating student involvement at the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics. I was honored to be the recipient of this year’s KPMG Citizenship Award. I am very excited to continue to apply my skills around the campus and beyond."

"The day was another success," said Connie Zavitz, manager of external relations and student advising in the Department of Management. "Lang accounting students had the chance to connect with KPMG professionals in an informal environment, where they could learn directly from them about career experience and advice."

KPMG Day is an annual event dedicated to the accounting firm. The day is designed to build KPMG's relationship with our faculty and students, where KPMG professionals from different practice areas interact with a variety of Lang business students. KPMG Day started as a faculty concept and has quickly become a marquee event for both KPMG and the Lang accounting program.

Lang's accounting program is fully accredited by the CPA of Ontario. The programs Graduate Diploma (GDip) allows students to advanced to Capstone 1 of the CPA Ontario's Professional Education Program.
