Imagined scarcity drives panic buying during COVID-19 pandemic

Marketing and consumer studies professor Dr. Sunghwan Yi explores the factors that contribute to excessive, panic buying during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

When the COVID-19 pandemic first brought the world to its knees in March 2020, incidents of panic buying began to make headlines around the globe. From Brazil to India, hygiene products and grocery staples flew off shelves in record time.

$12,500 in scholarships to support student gender equity initiatives

Applications are now open for the annual HeForShe gender equity scholarships, which total $12,500 across three student-based scholarships. The scholarships are in support of the United Nations’ HeForShe initiative and are funded by the Angel Gabriel Foundation and the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics.

Lang business students help solve real-world problems in case competition featuring Labatt Brewing Company

Last week, Lang business students had the opportunity to pitch creative business solutions to executives from Labatt Brewing Company during a live virtual case competition. The competition is part of a fourth-year capstone course that challenges students to apply lessons learned in the classroom to real-world challenges facing companies.

This year, the Lang School partnered with Labatt to propose a variety of challenges the company may face, ranging from sustainability initiatives and engaging new consumer markets, to strong e-commerce strategies during a pandemic.

Lang real estate students to compete for cash prize thanks to new scholarship

The Condo Store, one of the largest pre-construction real estate syndicates in North America, has established an annual scholarship to support real estate students at the Lang School. As part of the School’s commitment to provide financial support for students during the pandemic, Lang real estate students will have the opportunity to compete for a cash prize for the next five years (supported by University matched funds) in the third-year real estate appraisal course.

Lang MBA ranked best in Canada for sustainability focus

Corporate Knights’ new ranking lists the Lang School as #1 MBA in Canada, BComm #2.

The Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics has been named one of Canada’s leading business school for its focus on sustainability, according to a ranking conducted by Corporate Knights, one of the world’s largest media publishers with an explicit focus on responsible business.

Spreading business across U of G: Lang launches 6 new minors

6 new minors will help boost U of G student's competencies in business as they enter the job market.


The Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics is set to launch six new minors for fall 2020 intake, available to students across the University of Guelph. The new minors will allow both business and non-business students (including those studying arts, sciences and agriculture) to add sought-after, complementary business skills to their degree.
