Venture philanthropist and University of Guelph honorary doctorate recipient Mick Jackson will return to the War Memorial Hall podium February 23 as the inaugural speaker of the Derry Lecture. He will speak on the topic, “How a dollar can change the world.”

Jackson is the founder of the WildHearts charity, which is home to Micro-Tyco, an international business competition that challenges participants to raise as much money as possible with $1 in seed capital. All funds are turned into micro loans for entrepreneurs in developing countries.

Micro-Tyco has proved to be an authentic learning experience for many business students in MGMT*1000. Over the last two years, they have acquired business knowledge through the challenge and raised almost $20,000.

This lecture is part of the Derry first-year seminar symposium promoting interdisciplinary initiatives among students enrolled in Guelph’s first-year seminar program. The series is named for former U of G Board of Governors chair Douglas Derry and his family. Jackson’s talk is free and open to the public.

In addition to speaking on February 23, Jackson will be part of the “Universities Fighting World Hunger” summit and “Pitch for Progress,” a competition designed to let students share their ideas for changing the world.
