On September 16, 2010, eight students will make history and mark a milestone in experiential learning and curriculum innovation at the University of Guelph while fostering sustainable commerce at the Bullring Pub. The day marks the first meeting of MGMT*4050 Applied Community Project, which will be fully launched with a guest presentation from Chef Yasser Qahawish, owner of the Artisanale Café and Bistro in downtown Guelph, a pioneer in local food cuisine in the city.

U of G friends are business partners, strategic thinkers. In the late 1990s, three guys became friends while living in Lambton Hall. Although they didn’t know it at the time, their friendship would blossom into a thriving business partnership and draw them together with a number of other U of G graduates. Jacob Fuller, B.Comm. ’00, and Nico Angka, B.Sc.

On September 27, 2010, the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management will celebrate World Tourism Day, with the launch of the Tourism Research Collaborative and a presentation of research by Luc Durand, VP Ipsos Montreal.  The launch and presentation will occur at 3:30 pm in Macdonald Institute (MINS) 300.  Luc Durand will speak on "Naked Foods: Canadians' Taste for the Authentic.

Prof. Brent McKenzie, Marketing and Consumer Studies, was an honoured guest at a Sept. 9 event in Tallinn, Estonia, marking the start of Canada Food Month in Estonia. The event was sponsored by the Canadian embassy to increase the knowledge of Estonians about Canadian food and wine culture. McKenzie wrote an article, “Canadian Food and Wine — ‘Diplomats’ of Canadian Culture,” that is set to be published in Estonia’s leading weekly newspaper, Eesti Ekspress.

Brita Ball, Anne Wilcock, and Scott Colwell received a highly commended paper award for their paper entitled “The role of management commitment on factors predicting worker food safety behavior” that they presented at the Canadian Quality Congress at the University of Toronto in August 2010. The paper was based on the research done by Brita for her PhD.  Anne Wilcock is Brita’s co-advisor, and Scott Colwell is one of Brita’s advisory committee members.

Prof. Julia Christensen Hughes, Dean of the College of Management and Economics, was featured in Monday's Globe and Mail with her article, "University lectures: Why they're not the best way to learn".

“Income Property” host Scott McGillivray still fixes leaky faucets for his Guelph tenants.  In university towns, the fall signals a new rental season. As the owner of a number of Guelph properties, CME grad Scott McGillivray has been busy securing tenants for the school year.

Fourteen outstanding U of G employees received President's Awards for Exemplary Staff Service today at the eighth annual community breakfast, including Lois Lamble, Anne Bolger and Sandra Campbell who were awarded the Exemplary Team Recognition Award.  The administrative team in the Department of Economics was recognized for dedication, work ethic and mutual support. The trio has more than 42 years of service to the University, and share their experience and knowledge with others.

Bilingual employees earn more than their unilingual counterparts even if they aren't using their language skills on the job, according to a new University of Guelph study. Economics professors Louis Christofides and Robert Swidinsky examined the earnings of Canadians and compared the difference in wages between bilingual and unilingual employees as well as bilingual employees who are required to speak a second language on the job.

OTTAWA - An international academy of scientists is telling the UN’s global climate change research group to stick to science and stay out of advocacy. The InterAcademy Council, an international group representing scientific bodies from around the world, began a review of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change back in March after a series of controversies over accuracy.
