Fourteen outstanding U of G employees received President's Awards for Exemplary Staff Service today at the eighth annual community breakfast, including Lois Lamble, Anne Bolger and Sandra Campbell who were awarded the Exemplary Team Recognition Award.  The administrative team in the Department of Economics was recognized for dedication, work ethic and mutual support. The trio has more than 42 years of service to the University, and share their experience and knowledge with others.

Bilingual employees earn more than their unilingual counterparts even if they aren't using their language skills on the job, according to a new University of Guelph study. Economics professors Louis Christofides and Robert Swidinsky examined the earnings of Canadians and compared the difference in wages between bilingual and unilingual employees as well as bilingual employees who are required to speak a second language on the job.

OTTAWA - An international academy of scientists is telling the UN’s global climate change research group to stick to science and stay out of advocacy. The InterAcademy Council, an international group representing scientific bodies from around the world, began a review of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change back in March after a series of controversies over accuracy.

For the second year in a row, CME has had a strong showing in the annual Corporate Knight’s ranking of business schools. This year we placed 11th out of 47 undergraduate management programs with a commitment to sustainability, improved our performance in several categories, and increased our overall grade from 56.42 in 2009 to 61.95 in 2010.

The University of Guelph's NetImpact Chapter is excited to announce that it has received a Silver Status ranking from NetImpact central, which is based out of San Francisco. This ranking is attributed to the Guelph Chapter's successful speaker series, engagement with students, faculty and administration, and reach into the local community. The NetImpact Chapter would like to thank all members for helping Guelph's NetImpact achieve this honour.

An opinion piece by CME Prof. Sylvain Charlebois about the impact of climate change on agriculture is featured in today's Globe and Mail.

In the article, Charlebois points to Russia's recent decision to stop all grain exports because of extreme heat as an example of how weather is affecting global food productivity and, as a result, global food prices.

Hiking in Rockwood led him to a casting call for background actors. When Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam debuts on the Disney Channel Sept. 3, U of G Marketing student Peter Hewitt will be watching closely for a familiar face — his own.  Hewitt appears as a background actor in the film, which stars Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers.

Vinay Kanetkar and Towhidul Islam, Faculty Members in the Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies, and CME alumni Sameer Goswami won the best poster competition award at the 32nd Annual Marketing Science conference in Cologne Germany.  The title of the poster was "Expensive by the Dozen? Consumer Response to Quantity Premium".

Nearly $700,000 in new scholarships for emerging leaders in the agri-food and bioeconomy sectors has been awarded to 32 graduate students at the University of Guelph. The funding is provided via the University's partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA). 

Marketing Professor Towhidul Islam studies how consumers make savings choices. Every business wants to unravel the secrets of consumer decision-making. Why do people make the choices they make? Can we separate customer choice (or preference) from uncertainty (or inconsistency)? What influences choices, and how do preferences and inconsistencies change over time? Research by Prof. Towhidul Islam, Marketing and Consumer Studies, can help answer some of those questions. But he intends to do more than help corporations do a better job of selling their products.
