AHL LabNote 38-Sample handling and splitting charges at AHL
Sample handling and splitting charges are utilized at the AHL to help cover the cost of increased technical time and consumables. Sending in pre-split or pre-pooled samples, as required, will increase efficiency and help to avoid handling fees.
Specimen Reception
The split sera or split tissues/feces fee is used in Specimen Reception for splitting samples that are needed for testing in multiple lab sections and/or for send out purposes. For example, bovine feces for a diarrhea workup - culture, cryptosporidia (sucrose wet mount) and rotavirus/coronavirus PCR – needs to be split 3 ways for the Bacteriology, Parasitology, and Virology labs. Samples in 3 separate containers are needed.
Bacteriology
This fee is used in bacteriology when sample pooling is requested.
Mycoplasmology/Molecular Biology
This fee is used in Mycoplasmology/Molecular Biology for separating serum and/or sorting samples.
Parasitology
This fee is used in Parasitology for pooling, sorting and/or transferring feces from gloves to containers.
Virology
Sample handling fees by laboratory section
Lab section | Price | Details |
Specimen reception | $3.00 | per serum sample |
Specimen reception | $5.00 | per tissue/fecal sample |
Bacteriology | $5.50 | per sample; for sample pooling |
Mycoplasmology/Molecular Biology | $2.50 | per sample; for serum separation, sorting |
Parasitology | $6.00 | for sample pooling, sorting, manipulation, etc. |
Virology, sample handling | $0.90 | per sample; for serum separation, sorting, pooling |
