Labnote 50-Postmortem Submissions via Courier
AHL realizes that because of distance not everyone can drive to the labs in Guelph or Kemptville to bring in bodies for post mortem.
AHL is able to accept bodies for post mortem via courier.
Precautions need to be taken when using a courier, for full details please see our submission instructions in AHL Labnote 27.
Briefly, post mortem submissions via courier must abide by the following:
- Pack in an impervious container (e.g., RubbermaidR tote), do not use cardboard boxes. Triple bag (while sealing each bag) and include freezer packs. Leaks must be avoided during transit.
- Include a copy of the post mortem submission form in a ziplock-style bag at the top inside of the tote. Alternatively, the submission form may be emailed to ahlpm@uoguelph.ca.
- AHL provides Purolator return waybills for within Ontario. Contact ahlinfo@uoguelph.ca for a waybill. The shipment is categorized as ‘Exempt Animal Specimen’.
- Contact AHL Guelph (email: ahlpm@uoguelph.ca, phone: 519-824-4120 ext 54530) to alert us of the incoming shipment. Provide the Purolator tracking number at this time.
- Ship Monday to Wednesday for next day delivery and to avoid weekend delays.
Courier costs for these shipments, due to increased weight, are considerably higher than normal sample packages delivered to the AHL.
Courier costs for food animals will be covered by the AHL.
The AHL will need to charge back some of the courier cost for companion animal shipments over 5 kg (see pricing below). If applicable, the additional courier cost will be added to the invoice for the case.
- 5 kg to 20 kg - $25
- 20 kg to 40 kg- $50
- More than 40 kg-$75
