Helen received an Honours B.Sc. from the University of Guelph in 1978. Her keen interest in physiology, biochemistry and microbiology prompted her to pursue a diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from Mohawk College (1980). She worked in Clinical Chemistry and the Core laboratories for Hamilton Health Sciences, in Hamilton, Ontario. Helen joined the Clinical Pathology Section of the Animal Health Laboratory in November of 1999. She became the Clinical Pathology section supervisor and technical specialist in May 2006. She has been involved in Laboratory Services committee work for continuous improvement, process redesign and a new laboratory information system.
In addition to supervising the Clinical Pathology laboratory’s routine and STAT testing of diagnostic biochemistry, hematology, endocrine serum and urine samples, Helen liaises with research clients to set up the required testing panels and to provide sample, instrument and method information. Helen still gets a kick out of connecting the laboratory results to the patient’s clinical presentation.
