The MA program offers two streams – a thesis-based stream and a course-based stream with a major research paper (MRP). The thesis-based stream is six semesters and the MRP stream is three semesters. Both options provide students with core knowledge about Art History and Visual Culture within an interdisciplinary research context beneficial for transition to higher levels of education and research and/or for careers in a variety of fields, such as art publishing, museum and gallery work, or government agencies.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

MA by Course Work and Major Research Paper

In the course-work and major research paper option students must complete the three core courses, three electives and a course-based major research paper (MRP) of 10,000-15,000 words.

Two (2) of the electives must be selected from the list of courses below. The third elective may also be from this list, or it may be an approved graduate course from another College of Arts program. 

MA by Course Work and Thesis

In the thesis option, students must complete three core courses, one elective from the list below. The elective may be an approved graduate course from another College of Arts program.

Students will also complete a thesis, consisting of an extensive piece of research of 30,000-35,000 words, a public colloquium, and an oral examination. Students are expected to present and defend their work orally in a manner appropriate to a professional art historian's public presentation.

COMPLETION

The thesis-based option is designed to be completed in six semesters. The MRP option is designed to be completed in three semesters.

 

MRP Students must register for the following:

AVC*6800[1.00] Art History and Visual Culture Major Research Paper in the normal registration period and prior to writing their MRP.

 

Thesis Students must register for the following:

UNIV*7500 Research/Writing  in the normal registration period and prior to writing their MA Thesis.
