Details

The new federal guidelines on research security released last week have broad implications for those working in the life sciences, including many of us here in CBS. The new requirements will apply to anyone applying for federal funding starting May 1, 2024 and are in addition to the research security requirements that have already rolled out for provincially funded research programs.

The new guidelines will impact collaborations/partnerships with both academia and the private sector, and the grant application process. To help our researchers understand and navigate these new processes, including the differences between federal and provincial requirements, we will be hosting an information session for CBS researchers on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 12-1 p.m. in SSC 1511 (in person and virtual).

Research security specialists Amy Allison and Jennifer Wesley from the Office of Research will share important information about:

  • The newly released federal Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern (STRAC) Policy, including the lists of Sensitive Technology Research Areas and Named Research Organizations, as well as what constitutes affiliation under this policy.
  • How the province is assessing research security risks and the differences between the federal and provincial approaches.
  • What processes the University has implemented to help navigate these requirements.

Mazyar Fallah, Graham Holloway and Sarah Bates will also be in attendance to help answer questions.
