BEE: Biology Education Exchange. Cozy Discusison, Timely Topics, Community

Details

The CBS Office of Educational Scholarship and Practice Biology Education Exchange (BEE) is hosting a special workshop on Creating More Accessible STEM Classrooms. Please join us on Monday, June 23 from 12 to 1 p.m. in SSC 2315 to listen, learn, and share.

This workshop aims to leverage a community of practice towards a shared vision for STEM classrooms that is more accessible and accepting of disabled students. Using interactive activities, participants will consider the experiences of both students and instructors as they navigate a system that is too often inaccessible to students with disabilities. The interactive activity will rely on the lived experiences and perspectives of students with disabilities. The goal is to demonstrate the barriers, big and small, faced by disabled students, and the costs (academic, financial and health) that come with facing these barriers.

This workshop will be facilitated by Christine McCullough, a SoTL MSc candidate in the Department of Integrative Biology’s BioM Knowledge Access Lab. Christine’s research is focused on the impact of pedagogical practices on undergraduate student mental health. She has also done research and writing regarding disability and accessibility in postsecondary education.

BEE offers a space for timely conversations and casual exchange of ideas amongst the CBS teaching community. BEE is organized and facilitated by CBS instructors for anyone in CBS involved in teaching.

We hope to see you there!
