Dr. David Smith

The College of Biological Science extends our sympathies to the family and friends of Dr. David Smith, who was a professor at the University of Guelph in the Department of Botany for over 20 years. Dr. Smith passed away in Guelph, with his family by his side, on June 29, 2019.

Dr. Smith studied vegetation community dynamics and productivity. Two of his early research articles can be viewed in the Canadian Journal of Soil Science and the Canadian Journal of Botany.

In his retirement, Dr. Smith applied his life-long devotion to growing apple trees and created Eramosa Orchard just north of Guelph, which he made available to CBS students for research projects. He had a passion for carpentry, nature, gardening as well as for his family and his many furry friends, in particular his dogs.
