Alumni at a reception

At the end of June, College of Biological Science alumni returned to their alma mater for the University of Guelph’s Alumni Reunion Weekend. The weekend was packed with events, delicious meals, photo ops with the iconic cannon, prizes and giveaways, as well as many opportunities to catch up with friends and visit old haunts.

CBS alumni of all ages attended the weekend, but the 1976-78 graduates of the Marine Biology, Marine and Freshwater Biology, Fisheries Biology, and Fishers and Wildlife Biology programs and the Human Kinetics class of ’78 were especially well represented.

Events were held across campus, and there were many events planned specifically for the CBS alumni family.

On Friday, alumni toured the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics, a cutting-edge research facility that develops and uses DNA-based identification systems to discover, catalogue and monitor the diversity of multicellular life around the world.

On Saturday morning, Marine Biology alumni toured the Hagen Aqualab, the university’s aquatic research facility. They got a rundown on the facilities and its inhabitants, including starfish, hagfish, seahorses, coral and tank after tank of zebrafish, from coordinator Matt Cornish and assistant coordinator Mike Davies.

The President’s Milestone Luncheon attracted alumni from across colleges for a gourmet meal and a speech by university President Charlotte Yates.

Later that afternoon, alumni met for a panel discussion on the impacts of climate change on marine and freshwater species, with faculty members Dr. Todd Gillis, Dr. Sarah Alderman, Dr. Beren Robinson, Dr. Joey Bernhardt and Dr. Marie Gutgesell sharing their research and experiences and sparking a lively discussion with alumni.

That evening, Marine Biology alumni were greeted by CBS Dean Mazyar Fallah and Integrative Biology Chair Amy Newman for a special reception and dinner in the Summerlee Science Complex.
