The University of Guelph has been ranked second in Canada and among the top 51-75 in the world for biotechnology, according to the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. This is the highest rank the University has ever achieved in Biotechnology.

U of G was also ranked eighth in the world for world-class faculty in biotechnology. This metric measures the number of faculty who have achieved a highly cited researcher status within this subject area and faculty who hold leadership positions in top international biotechnology journals.

Biotechnology is a long-standing strength within the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, where researchers are investigating new therapeutic candidates to combat antimicrobial resistance, advancing drug discovery and immune-based therapies for human infectious and inflammatory diseases, developing novel traits for plants and treatments for crop disease, and improving the efficiency of yeast fermentation for alcohol production, among many other areas of research. This expertise is an inherent part of the department’s Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, and Molecular Biology and Genetics degree programs.

The department also supports the Master of Biotechnology program, which combines hands-on scientific training with business and entrepreneurial skills, in collaboration with the Lang School of Business and Economics. Biotechnology is also offered as an undergraduate minor.

Beyond biotechnology, U of G also ranked seventh in Canada and among the top 51-75 in the world for ecology, another research strength within the College of Biological Science.

Every year, the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy ranks more than 2,000 institutions worldwide across 57 subject areas, based on criteria including world-class faculty, international collaboration, research quality, output, and impact.
