Madison Turner, Emir Rahman Named Winners of the CBS Three Minute Thesis Heat
Madison Turner, PhD student in Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Emir Rahman, M.Sc. student in Integrative Biology, have been named winner and runner-up at the College of Biological Science’s Three Minute Thesis Heat. They will both go on to represent the college at the university-level competition on April 30.
Turner won the competition for her presentation, “Under the hood of biomolecular machines: How protein structure drives function,” and Rahman was named runner-up for “Levels of ammonia pollution allowed in our waters still reduces egg laying in fish.” Turner and Rahman will receive a prize of $250 and $150 in hospitality gift cards, respectively.
Turner is supervised by Dr. Siavash Vahidi in MCB, while Rahman is co-supervised by Dr. Glen Van Der Kraak and Dr. Nick Bernier in IB.
The Three Minute Thesis competition challenges master’s and PhD students to present their research and its impacts in three minutes or less to a panel of non-specialist judges. Competitors are allowed just one slide, with no notes and no props. This event teaches students the valuable skill of consolidating and communicating their research in an engaging and accessible way.
U of G’s Three Minute Thesis final competition will be held April 30 at 1:30 p.m. in Room 442 of the University Centre. All are welcome to attend. The winner of the university-wide competition will receive a $1,000 prize towards their tuition and will go on to the provincial competition held on May 6 at Brock University.
