U of G Ranked #1 in Canada for Biotechnology, Top 51-75 in the World, According to Shanghai Rankings

The University of Guelph has been ranked first in Canada and among the top 51-75 in the world for biotechnology, according to the 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. This is the highest rank the University has ever achieved in Biotechnology, after being ranked second in Canada last year.

Biotechnology’s ranking was driven by the “World-Class Faculty” metric, which measures faculty members’ awards, citations and leadership roles in journals and academic organizations.

The University was also ranked 5th in Canada for Ecology for the second year in a row, driven by the “World-Class Output” metric, which measures the number of papers published in top journals and top conferences, and the “High-Quality Research” metric, which measures the number of articles published in influential (Q1) journals.

Biotechnology is a long-standing strength in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, with research spanning drug discovery, antimicrobial resistance, immune-based therapies, crop health and yeast fermentation, among other areas. This expertise is incorporated into the department’s Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, and Molecular Biology and Genetics degree programs.

The department also supports the Master of Biotechnology program, which combines scientific training with business and entrepreneurial skills, in collaboration with the Lang School of Business and Economics. Biotechnology is also offered as an undergraduate minor.

Every year, the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy ranks more than 2,000 institutions worldwide across 57 subject areas across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences.
