Student Award Winners

Congratulations to Andrew Halligan and Jennifer Winer - winners of the School of Computer Science Capstick awards.

The Dr. Charles Capstick Graduation Prize is awarded to the top two students (by cumulative average at graduation) in the School of Computer Science.

Jennifer has also been awarded the CPES Society of Excellence award, and Andrew has been named the winner of the Governor General's Silver Medal.

Great job Andrew and Jennifer.

Spring Academic Open House

Last Wednesday the School of Computer Science welcomed prospective students and their families to the University of Guelph for the 2014 Spring Academic Open House.

Prospective students and their families were invited to tour the campus, and to take part in several short talks by students, staff, and faculty. The morning began with a presentation about the various programs in the SoCS by Greg Klotz (Undergraduate Program Counsellor & Industry Liaison Officer), Stefan Kremer (Director of the SoCS), and Laura Gatto (co-op co-ordinator for the SoCS).

Hemochromatosis Month

May is Hemochromatosis Month - a month to bring awareness to a genetic disorder that leaves those afflicted with too much iron in their system. Left untreated, the condition can be fatal.

Diagnosed in 2010, School of Computer Science Professor Gary Grewal has spent the last several semesters working with two senior undergraduate students Frank Liu and Ryan Pattison to develop a mobile application to help those with Hemochromatosis manage their condition.

Student Success At The CBaSE Hub Incubator

Two students from the SoCS have been named to the inaugural cohort of startups that will receive funding and mentoring as part of the CBaSE Hub Incubator program.

Senior undergraduate student Ben Douek and PhD Candidate Jason Ernst are founding members of two startups - EveBoard One and Red Tree Robotics. Each startup has been awarded $8000 in funding as well as mentoring and office space in the CBaSE Incubator labs.
