Biological Engineering - Restricted Electives - 2021/2022

1. Technical Electives

The combination of elective credits required to graduate is noted in the Course Calendar for your specific Cohort. All elective course offerings are subject to a minimum enrollment of 10 students. Courses may be cancelled by the university at any time if enrollment is less than 10. Semester offerings for courses may change without notice. Students should refer to the current Undergraduate Calendar to confirm that the course will be offered in the semester indicated in this program guide. Concerned that the elective prerequisites have changed mid-program? See the Engineering Elective Prerequisite - History of Changes table.

A maximum of 1.5 credits at the 1000 course level is allowed for elective requirements (this limit applies to all electives, including technical electives, complementary studies electives and free electives, where applicable).(Rule no longer applies as of November 2022)

BIOE-1 Elective List: Biological Engineering Electives (1.75 1.50 Credits Required) updated June 2023

Note: BIOE students following calendars older than 2023 are now required to completed 23.25 credits to graduate and not 23.50 credits (as published in the undergraduate calendar and Student Planning for your cohort)

2. Free Electives

Free electives (0.50 credits required) are intended for Biological Engineering students to add interest courses that complement the Biological Engineering Major, and provide experience in academic areas that connect to related career paths. Some academic areas identified for Biological Engineering students include courses in FOOD, CHEM, BIOM, MBG or TOX. Please see Program Counsellors for suggestions for electives in these areas.

3. Complementary Studies Electives

Biological Engineering students must select [2.00] credits (four courses) from the Complementary Studies electives. You must select courses from the following:

  • 0.5 credits (1 course) from list CSE-1 Complementary Studies Electives: Humanities and Social Sciences
  • 0.5 credits (1 course) from list CSE-2 Complementary Studies Electives: Sustainable Development and Environmental Stewardship
  • 1.0 credits (2 courses) from any of the lists:
    • CSE-1 Complementary Studies Electives: Humanities and Social Sciences,
    • CSE-2 Complementary Studies Electives: Sustainable Development and Environmental Stewardship,
    • CSE-3 Complementary Studies Electives: Economics and Project Management, or
    • CSE-4 Complementary Studies Electives: Languages (max 0.5 credit).

4. Conditions for Graduation

To qualify for the degree, the student must complete the courses required for the Bachelor of Engineering Program in Biological Engineering, obtaining a minimum of 23.50 credits (Regular Program) or 25.50 credits (CO-OP Program), and must achieve an overall minimum cumulative average of at least 60% and a minimum cumulative average of at least 60% in all ENGG courses.
