On-Campus STEM SUMMER CAMPS: (August 2021)
For the first time since 2019, we are thrilled to announce that we are officially able to run our STEM-themed day camps (reduced capacity + socially distanced) during the month of August for youth going into grades 2-6 in the fall!
Creative Encounters with Science is a non-profit science, engineering, and technology program run through the University of Guelph. Run and instructed by undergraduate students, Creative Encounters is dedicated to hands-on learning using everyday materials that establish the view that everyone can be involved in science!
In May and June, workshop programs are run in Guelph and the surrounding area. Topics cover a range of curriculum found in elementary schools, including space, nutrition, engineering, and biology. Recently, programming has expanded to include bilingual/French lesson plans that are taught in immersion and French schools. An Aboriginal satellite workshop program in the Parry Sound area is also run for one week in June as part of a Go Where Kids Are initiative. From September to June, monthly clubs are run after school and on weekends.
However, Creative Encounters with Science is probably best known for its camp programming which runs in July and August. With the exception of one week of satellite camp in Kincardine, the University of Guelph campus becomes overrun with campers excited about science, engineering, and technology. Programs include the CES general science camp for three age groups that covers a broad range of topics, Lego Robotics NXT, Game Design, PAGES all girls residential camp, TechQuest, and two specialty camps which vary on the year.
Creative Encounters with Science is a beneficial program not only for children, teachers, and parents, but to the University of Guelph! It is an amazing experience for students to be involved with, either as instructors, mentors, or volunteers, as well as for University of Guelph faculty who donate their time as be mentors.
