A message from the School of Engineering in response to recent events

Posted on Wednesday, April 20th, 2022

Dear SOE Faculty, Staff and Students,

I want to connect with you directly following reports that during a March 31 event hosted by our engineering society, a wudu facility was desecrated. The University is aware of the incident and an investigation is currently under way.

I was horrified to hear about the incident. It is in direct contrast to the values we espouse at the University of Guelph. It is so discouraging that we work collectively each day to ensure a safe, respectful environment for our peers and colleagues, and a select one or few would undo that in a matter of moments. No one should feel unsafe in the place where they learn or work.

The School of Engineering is committed to providing an inclusive environment for all its students, faculty and staff. We pride ourselves on our diverse community, recognizing diversity as a strength, and we greatly respect our Muslim community members.

The University understands that these events can have a deep emotional impact on those affected. Support resources are available through our wellness partners for those needing further assistance.

I sincerely regret that this incident happened. Following the University’s investigation, SOE and CEPS will support appropriate follow-up to prevent this from happening again and to rebuild your trust in U of G.

You are welcome to send me questions you may have. As the investigation is ongoing, I do not have additional updates to share at this time, but I will do my best to respond to or direct your question appropriately.

Sincerely

Ibrahim
