Two Lang business graduates receive top U of G convocation awards

Each year, the University of Guelph recognizes select students and faculty members for teaching, service and academic achievements during the spring convocation ceremonies.

Convocation is a special time during the academic year, where graduands and their guests will often have the privilege of being addressed by a notable business leader who the University of Guelph is conferring with an honorary doctorate in recognition of their achievements.

Last month, Lang business students returned to Campobello Island to work with the island community to address the complex sustainability issues they face.

It was the second year that Lang business students have travelled to the island as part of an experiential learning course in business consulting.

Lang real estate students hit podium in Las Vegas case competition

Last week, four Lang undergraduate students from the real estate and housing program travelled to Las Vegas, Nevada to compete in the Retail Real Estate Case Competition, an international invitation-only case competition.

Congratulations goes out to the Lang team, who placed third overall at the competition. The team consisted of Kevin Kovachis, Breanna Rozon, Samantha Marshall and Julian Merigliano. Along with a podium finish, the team collected $5,000 in prize money.

Lang professor receives UN Excellence Award for Service

Lang business professor Rumina Dhalla has been announced the recipient of the Excellence in Service award from the United Nations PRME Chapter North America. The award is one of three Excellence Awards, which recognize the ongoing efforts of individuals in advancing the six United Nations Principles for PRME in the areas of research, teaching and service.

She will formally receive the award at the UN PRME Chapter North America’s 5th Regional Meeting, hosted in Cleveland, Ohio from June 2 to 4.

Lang Business grad student receives Arrell Scholarship

The Arrell Food Institute at the University of Guelph recently released the recipients for the Arrell Food Institute graduate scholarship, a scholarship worth $50,000 a year. Congratulations to Andrew Nixon, PhD in the School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management, who is the first Arrell Scholar in the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics.

Working under the supervision of Lang professor Simon Somogyi, Nixon will focus on how farm businesses can transition from primary processing to creating value-added branded products for international export.

Ontario high school students compete in Lang Business competition

Over 350 Ontario high school students travelled to the University of Guelph last week, competing in the second annual Business Pentathlon, a competition hosted by the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics.

Designed by undergraduate Lang business students, the Business Pentathlon invites Ontario high schools to compete in five fun and challenging business-focused events that test their business knowledge, communication and leadership skills.
