April 19: Sylvain Charlebois comments on cuts to federal food inspection jobs in today's Guelph Mercury

According to today's Guelph Mercury, the Guelph offices of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency will receive 30 to 35 job losses as the federal government enacts measures to eliminate its deficit. The union representing the employees revealed this week that veterinarians, biologists and agricultural scientists will be impacted. Acting CME Dean Sylvain Charlebois comments on this issue

U of G Prof Helps Launch First Canadian Positive Psychology Association

When you spend much of your time at work, it’s important to feel good about what you do, says Jamie Gruman, a professor in the University of Guelph’s Department of Business, who studies well-being in the workplace.

Helping improve workplace well-being is one purpose of the Canadian Positive Psychology Association (CPPA), a new organization co-founded by Gruman to share knowledge and foster collaboration in positive psychology. In this field, scientists study personal characteristics, behaviours and relationships that help individuals and communities to thrive.

April 13: Program Counsellor at the Head of the Class

It’s not your ordinary waiting room. The walls are covered with posters explaining the steps to take to solve various problems and answering questions like: “Do I really need Jerome’s signature?” and “Why is Jerome taking so long?” A small table holds puzzles, books and other items to keep you entertained while you wait. As you pick up one of the puzzles and start twisting it in your hands, the problems you arrived with don’t seem quite so urgent. You feel calmer. That’s one of Jerome’s goals.

April 10: Students present business plans

Ten University of Guelph students with aspirations to start their own businesses presented their plans last Thursday as part of their Applied Project in Entrepreneurship course. The students come from across the University of Guelph campus but share one thing in common – a clear passion for their entrepreneurial ideas. These ideas cover a broad range of areas from newborn photography to car detailing and from barn sitting to healthier chocolate milk.

April 3: Acting Dean Sylvain Charlebois on CTV's Canada AM discussing supply management

Prof. Sylvain Charlebois, Acting Dean of the College of Management and Economics, appeared on CTV’s Canada AM Tuesday. He discussed supply management in Canada and what the agricultural economy would look like in the post-supply management era.

As an award-winning researcher and teacher, Charlebois is an expert in food distribution and safety. The author of two books and numerous articles, he is now writing a book on global food safety systems. He belongs to the national expert advisory committee of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
