Collection Protocol

1) Collect into a leakproof sterile container. Alternatively, use fluff collection kit or swab samples and place swabs into peptone vials supplied by AHL. Refrigerate immediately. Order peptone vials and fluff collection kits by contacting OHSFP coordinator at ext 54543. 2) For floor sample it is recommended to use a dedicated pair of shoes for each barn. Once in the barn, place shoe covers over shoes. Walk the full length of the barn, remove shoe covers and place them into a leakproof sterile bag. Refrigerate immediately. Do NOT put shoe covers on your shoes before walking through the footbath as this can interfere with Salmonella spp. isolation. 3) Wearing gloves, wipe the dust from the fans, feed lines, water lines, etc. with a sterile moistened gauze pad. Collect into a leakproof sterile bag. Refrigerate immediately.
