Centre for Scottish Studies presents Chris Nighman "The Reception ofThomas of Ireland's 'Manipulus florum' in Walter Bower's 'Scotichronicon'"

In a 2012 article in "Innes Review", three scholars reported th eir discovery that four Latin proverbs painted on the wall of the warming ho use at Inchcolm Abbey were derived from the "Manipulus florum", a collectio n of authoritative Latin quotations compiled at Paris in 1306. This paper wi ll demonstrate that the most famous abbot of Inchcolm, Walter Bower (d.1449 ), employed the "Manipulus" in composing his famous historical work, the " Scotichronicon" (1447).
