Details
2026 marks 100 years of celebrating Black History in February. Commemoration in February is meant to be a demonstration of what has been done in the study of Black history during the year and a demonstration of greater things to be accomplished.
In honour of this Black tradition, this lecture explores work being conducted by University of Guelph History students Katie Gutteridge and Jordyn MacWhirter (under the supervision of Dr. Deirdre McCorkindale) attempting to reconstruct a replica of a red 19th-century military coat worn by Black militia members when they attempted to stop the arrest and extradition of freedom seeker Nelson Hackett in 1841.
