What's Happening in Black Canadian Studies

Have you ever wondered where research can take you...

Research contributed by BLCK faculty, Dr. Deirdre McCorkindale and Dr. Jade Ferguson, provided inspiration and content for the City of Guelph's 2024 artist-in-residence, HAUI's film installation - Aunt Harriet

Aunt Harriet is a meditative moving portrait exploring introspection, healing, and aging. Set against the backdrop of rural Ontario, it deepens the memory of Black lives, bridging past and present – history and myth.

  • The full exhibition can be seen at the Stratford Perth Museum, from October 11th 2025 until January 2026.
  • The world festival premiere will take place in November at the Guelph Film Festival.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Winter 2026 registration is open! Things to look out for:

BLCK*2020 Black Research Methodologies

With Dr McCorkindale, you will examine the methodologies and method-making of a range of Black scholars, artists, and writers, who disrupt disciplinary projects and normative knowledges. illuminate narratives of Black life, and humanity, and think about the possibilities of liberation.

BLCK*3010 Experiential Learning in Black Studies

Dr. Ferguson leads this capstone course for students. It will involve a community-engaged learning (CEL) project or experiential learning (EL) placement in the surrounding community of Guelph/Wellington County.
