Matthew Edwards Wins Georgina Feldberg Memorial Student Award

Posted on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2026

Matthew Edwards, PhD Candidate in the History Department, has won the 2026 Georgina Feldberg Memorial Student Award in the History of Health and Medicine of the Canadian Journal of Health History. The award is given to the best unpublished essay based on original research on any topic within the history of health and medicine.

Matthew won for his research paper: "Dolls in the Basement: Intersex Bodies and Anatomical Modelling in Kingston, 1946-1966." The paper analyzes a rare set of 1940s Canadian medical waxes depicting intersex bodies. It traces how the waxes were modelled from living patients and subsequently used in medical teaching at Queen's University to frame intersex traits as "endocrinopathies" in postwar instruction.

Congratulations from all of us!
