Details
The University of Guelph Honey Bee Research Centre is a leader in apiculture, research and education. Honey bees play a key role in agricultural productivity and ecosystem sustainability by providing pollination services to crops and wild plants. Our mandate is to help honey bees continue this vital work.
The group experiences a 75 minute tour of the facilities at the HBRC. At the start of the tour, staff members will be introduced in the front garden. The participants will then enjoy a short and interactive presentation on honey bee biology, pollination and pollinator plants. Before going to the apiary, instructions are given on how to behave around stinging insects. A demonstration on how beekeepers are able to safely work with bees is carried out. Participants form a line in the apiary and beehive components are brought to them for an up-close view. Everyone is given the option of tasting honey directly from the honey comb!
At the end of the tour, participants may purchase our honey, hive products and educational materials (Also available at shophbrc.com for shopping before, or after, the tour!).
