Be Ready with Naloxone: Stigma-Free Substance Use Support

Date and Time

Location

UC 430

Details

Join Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health and Student Wellness Services for a supportive, judgment-free workshop focused on reducing substance-use stigma and building confidence in responding to opioid poisonings. Many people—including students, colleagues, friends, family members, and even youth—may be at risk without others realizing it. Being prepared with knowledge and a naloxone kit helps keep our entire community safer.

Naloxone is a safe, easy-to-use medication that temporarily reverses the effects of an opioid poisoning. You do not need to be a health professional to use it, and giving naloxone to someone who is not experiencing an opioid poisoning will not cause harm. Having naloxone and knowing how to use it can support basic first-aid preparedness, similar to having CPR training or a first-aid kit.

All participants will receive a free naloxone kit.

This session will cover:

• The substance-use spectrum
• How stigma affects people who use substances and how reducing stigma increases safety
• Local insights, including current substance-use data from the University of Guelph student population
• How to recognize an opioid poisoning, how to administer naloxone, and post-poisoning care
• Available resources on and off campus
