The final meeting for Philosophy in the Dark this semester will tease the exploration of sacred / profane through music, considering the horror of creativity and agency of the nonhuman – particularly that of machines.

Adrian De Leon is an Abagatan (Southern) Ilokano writer and cultural educator from Barangay Bagong Tanyag in Manila by way of Scarborough, Ontario. He teaches Philippine culture in classrooms, museums, and martial arts gyms. His first book, Rouge, was published in 2018 by Mawenzi House. Adrian was a Fulbright Scholar in Hawai‘i and Seattle in 2017-2018, and he is finishing a PhD in History at the University of Toronto. He is currently working on his second poetry collection and a first novella.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Hande Gurses  

In a second teaser to the upcoming “Philosophy of Horror” group for Winter 2019, we are confronted with several questions about transcendence and the ‘here-after’ or ‘outside." The Endless, with its invocation of repetition, spirals of return, eternity and cultic practice, ask us to consider both the familiar and the strange conceptions of the afterlife or beyond. Is the prospect of eternity (in duration and phenomenal experience) always a blessing of infinite joy worthy of affirmation? What horrors might lie "beyond"?

Nigel Lezama, a French professor from Brock University, will be partaking in the School of Languages and Literatures' Public Lecture Series. Nigel's talk will be on Paris, Fashion Capital in the 19th Century. His research focuses on the theme of the body and fashion in French culture and literature in the 19th century. In 2017, Nigel co-organized the international conference, New Reach: Past, Present and Future of Luxury. This talk is open to the public, all are welcome to attend!
