British Empire in Africa and Asia (HIST*3380)

Course Description: 

This course examines the British Empire from the 18th through the 20th centuries. It focuses on: the empire in Asia and Africa; ideologies of empire; and European and non-European approaches and reactions to empire.

Topic: 

British Imperialism in Asia and Africa is specifically interested in the impact of British imperialism on the non-Western societies of Asia and Africa and the latter’s responses. The course combines a narrative, analytical, and historiographical approach to the material. The course challenges students to think critically about what imperialism meant for both the British and their subject peoples.

Methods of Evaluation and Weights:

  • Document Study: 10%
  • Mid-term Test: 25%
  • Essay: 35%
  • Final Exam: 30%

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Identify and explain major people, themes, and events in the history of the British Empire.
  2. Develop written communication skills through assignments.
  3. Develop the skills to locate and critically evaluate primary and secondary sources.
  4. Understand the practices of the historian and an understanding of academic integrity as applied to the responsible use of historical sources and the ethical presentation of one’s work.
  5. You will learn that history is a diverse enterprise which helps us to understand different cultures, regions, and states.
