Research to Uncover Bias in Computer Vision

As much as it is easier for humans to describe the content of photographs, summarize a video and recognize a face, the more complex it is for computers to do the same. Dr Neil Bruce who is an associate professor in the School of Computer Science is exploring the research on Computer Vision. This research is expected to lead to technologies that transform our lives, including technologies from self-driving cars to the diagnosis of diseases.

SoCS Graduate Student Research Indicates that Internet is not required for Storing Data

Computer Science Graduate Student Marshall Asch’s research on data storage and mobile ad hoc networks have produced results that have long-lasting implications. In today’s world, the internet has become an integral part of our everyday lives. Although, such an important part of today’s world, it is shocking to realize that some people might not have access to fast and reliable internet.

A recent study suggests that COVID-19 has sparked Research Collaborations on a global scale.

The research study that was led by Dr Theresa Bernardo and Dr Dan Gillis monitored news sources, journals, social media, and various other sources to deconstruct the research collaboration around the world. The study revealed that the research collaborations varied from scientific articles, data dashboards, data sharing agreements, hackathons, AI-enabled predictive models and, included the initiatives to make personal protective equipment, ventilators, and screening test.

A Project to be Launched to Understand the Effects of Animal Diseases on Society

Animal health leaders and researchers from the Global Burden of  Animal Diseases  (GBADs) programme have secured US$7 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. As the University of Guelph takes the top rank among Canadian universities for Experiential Learning, it is a pleasure to announce our partnership with Mitacs for students in University of Guelph's Master of cybersecurity and threat intelligence (MTCI). Mitacs is a national wide recognized research organization that interconnects the skills and experiences in the field of industry, academia and government. The main goal of the initiative is to establish over 100 internships over the next five years for the students in the graduate program.

SoCS Faculty Awarded Tier 2 Canada Research Chair

The School of Computer Science is proud to announce that one of our faculty members, Dr. Ali Dehghantanha, has been awarded a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) from the federal Government of Canada. Earlier today, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, Navdeep Bains, announced a $195-million federal investment in the CRC program that included the bestowing of 259 new and renewed chairships at institutions across Canada.
